Krakow, Poland

17 September 2019 we flew from Doncaster Airport to Krakow with Wizzair, which was very handy as we live only two miles from the airport. The flight arrived in Krakow just before midnight and we had a taxi booked to take us the 20 minute journey to our central hotel where we checked in and went straight to bed.

The following day, after breakfast, we walked into the old town and headed to the main square – a really beautiful area with many interesting features. We spent the day exploring and visiting several of the pretty churches around the town. In the evening we dined at a lovely Italian restaurant near to our hotel where the food was good and the prices reasonable.

Day 2 we went on an organised trip to the death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau. Our English speaking guide was excellent and brought the full horror of both sites to our understanding. It was a truly memorable visit but not one I would wish to repeat!

Day 3 we decided to take a Tuk Tuk tour of the city and outer areas. As well as being a fun thing to do it also enabled us to see parts of the city we might never have found by ourselves. We also visited the old Jewish Quarter which was very interesting.

Day 4 we again went on an organised trip this time to the Wielicka Salt Mines. Here you had first to descend 380 steps to one of the lower levels and then after a short walk more steps until finally you were about 125 metres below the surface. A two mile walk underground then ensued but the sights were amazing and it was well worth it. Thank goodness, however, that the way back to the surface was by Elevator!

Day 5 we flew home to Doncaster – shattered but with great memories of a truly beautiful city.

Saga’s Spirit of Discovery Luxury New Ship

Earlier this month I was lucky enough to be invited on board the new Saga Luxury Cruise Ship – Spirit of Discovery which had docked at Dover. Saga invited a selection of UK Travel Agents to a two night event in order that they could experience everything that the ship has to offer potential clients.

Spirit is indeed beautiful and, whilst it is larger than Saga’s other ships, it is still only a medium size cruise ship holding a maximum 999 passengers. All cabins are outside with balconies, have lovely fitted bathrooms, and spacious wardrobes and drawers. Some even have walk-in wardrobes.

We ate in various restaurants from the main dining room to the specialty restaurants (at no extra charge) and the food was excellent throughout.

Spirit is also the first of Saga’s ships to have a theatre on board (albeit quite small) and the cast put on excellent evening shows on both nights.

Our cruise out from Dover was only short but enabled us to judge the ship at sea where she was very quiet and smooth.

Kefalonia

Aspects of Kefalonia

This month we flew from our local airport, Doncaster, to Kefalonia which is on of the Ionian islands of Greece.

It is a very pretty island and is quite mountainous – a challenge for drivers as were soon to find out.

We stayed at the Hotel Mediterranee in Lassi, a lovely hotel with the most amazing views out to sea. A seaview room is definitely worth the supplement here. We hired a car for 4 days and set off each day to explore a different part of the island. On one of these trips we went to Fiskado in the north of the island, a journey which looked relatively simple on the map, but in real life was like a rally drive over the mountains and round hairpin bends with enormous drops to the side of us. It is not for the feint hearted, but Fiskardo is definitley worth the effort.

We also visited Sami, Skala and Argostoli which is the capital.

The Greek people are very friendly and it is no wonder that at our hotel the staff were constantly welcoming back return guests.

Kefalonia definitely has my stamp of approval!

Budapest

On 21st March, just 3 days after returning from our cruise I had to get ready and fly off to Budapest for a conference. We stayed at the 5 star Intercontinental Hotel which is a very well positioned hotel and offered excellent service and accommodation.

Budapest is a really beautiful city located on both sides of the river Danube. Although I had been previously, I still managed, on our free day, to see even more than before. Four of us hired 2 Tuk Tuks and went on a sight-seeing tour with a difference – it was great fun and enabled to get to parts of the city where the coaches and buses were unable to reach.

Budapest should definitely be on everyone’s bucket list!

Emirates & India Cruise

After the busy booking months of January and February we went on a cruise with Celebrity Cruises on their Ship Constellation. We flew to Dubai and cruised round the United Arab Emirates, then Oman and then onward to India, visiting Cochin, New Mangalore, Goa and Mumbai. Celebrity are a 5 star cruise line and the accommodation on board, food and entertainment we all first rate.

We stayed in an Aqua Class stateroom which gives you access to the wonderful Blu Restaurant with its fine dining experience. We went on several of the organized excursions and saw some wonderful sights, from the dancing waters and Burj Kalifa tower in Dubai to Abu Dhabi by night, a guided walk in Oman and then in India from the back waters of Kerala to the city and exuberance of Mumbai!
